Protecting your garden furniture

While outdoor furniture covers aren't the most pleasant thing to look at on your deck or patio they are necessary for prolonging the use of your outdoor furniture. Finding a set that matches your awning or furniture is much easier with advances in fade resistant material. If you are planing to take your outdoor furniture in for winter months you may still want to consider buying and outdoor furniture cover set. Exposing your outdoor furniture to harsh sun and elements daily during the summer can still have a devastating effect on your outdoor furniture over time.

Measuring your furniture before buying covers is an obvious but often over looked step in buying furniture covers. While manufactures of high end patio furniture will often have a specific set of covers for their furniture that offers a perfect fit, you may find yourself not wanting to buy that particular set for some reason or another. Finding a generic set of outdoor furniture covers can open you up to many more options in design and color. Never limit your options but not knowing your furniture's measurements. To take measurements of your furniture simply measure it as if it had four flat sides.

Talking with a store associate or reading the description on each cover will help you determine if the fabric it is made from is suitable for your climate. Some fabrics will crack from extreme cold or heat so finding the right fabric will extend the life of your covers. Should you plan to leave your furniture outdoors during the winter you should always check to make sure the cover fabric can handle this type of weather. Buying fabric which is only heat resistant and exposing it to snow will cause massive damage to your covers.

Securing your outdoor furniture covers is vital to preserving your furniture. Drawstrings are recommended over other types of securing devices. Drawstrings allow the user to secure covers that aren't an exact fit to the furniture. Zippers can also be seen on many furniture covers as well. The problem with zippers is that most often they are constructed with metal. Metal has a tendency to retain heat and can actually be harmful to your furniture covers of a long period of time. Zippers also have a tendency to brake over extended use. Buying a whole new set of covers when one zipper jumps its track is not very economical.

By visiting the original showroom you purchased your outdoor furniture from you may be able to view a catalog of the manufactures matching cover sets. If you don't see your set on the showroom floor it may have been discontinued. While manufactures sometimes still produce cover sets for furniture that is no longer in production it is possible they no longer produce the cover as well. Ask a store associate if there is a website or outlet store for the manufacture in the area. By checking an outlet store you may be able to find discontinued cover sets at a much less expensive price then on a showroom floor.
